What is a watt in regards to Two Way Radios?

Answer:  In regards to two way radios, a watt is a measure of power that translates to range.  This blog post will answer any questions you may have about two way radio watts.

How many watts do two way radios come with?

That depends on the model you are using.  Handheld two way radios are available in the following watts: 1-watt, 2-watt, 4-watt, and 5-watt.  5-watts is the maximum wattage for handheld radios.  Below is a breakdown of each of the watts:

1-watt: 1-watt is the minimum wattage for handheld two way radios.  1-watt two way radios typically provide coverage up to 200,000 sq. ft., 15 floors.  In line of sight situations outdoors, you can expect to reach around 1 mile depending on your surroundings.  1-watt radios are popular in many industries, including: restaurants, retail, smaller hotels, bowling alleys, furniture stores, and countless others.

2-watts:  2-watt two way radios typically provide coverage up to 250,000 sq. ft., 20 floors. You can expect to communicate from 1 to 2 miles depending on your surroundings.  2-watt radios are popular in many industries, including: construction, movie theatres, schools, and many others.

4-watts: 4-watt two way radios typically provide coverage up to 350,000 sq. ft., 30 floors.  You can expect to communicate from 2 to 4 miles depending on your surroundings.  4-watt radios are popular in many similar industries as 2-watts, and many others, including:  construction, schools, colleges, large hotels, and others.

5-watts: 5-watts is the maximum wattage for handheld two way radios.  With a 5-watt two way radio, you can expect to communicate from 2 to 5 miles, or perhaps further, all depending on your surroundings.  5-watt radios are popular in countless industries, including:  golf courses, manufacturing, construction, large schools, colleges, large hotels, and many others.

How do I get more range than 5-watts?

Great question!  You could use mobile radios, which have much higher wattges.  If you want to get more than 5-watts of power out of your handheld radios, then you would have to use a repeater system in conjunction with your handheld radios.

Maximum range depends on your surroundings.  Typically the maximum range for a handheld radio is 5-watts, though it is possible to get more depending on your surroundings.  If you use a mobile or portable repeater, you can expect to get up to 8 miles or more depending on your surroundings.

For range greater than that, you will need to use a repeater tower.  Repeater towers are a series of antennas that can give coverage through large areas, including towns and cities.  Unless you build your own repeater tower, you will need to rent the right to use someone else’s.

Where can I find someone to rent the right to use their repeater tower?

Another great question.  You have a lot of options.  The easiest way is probably to talk to a local taxi cab company and see who they use.  You can also talk to local Safety & Rescue, such as the police station or fire station.  Local radio dealers may be able to help you as well.

I am experiencing static/interference, etc.  Do I need more wattage/range to fix this?

Maybe.  Before spending money on getting more powerful radios or repeaters, try reprogramming your radios to different frequencies and codes so that you are operating on different frequencies than other businesses around you.  This may fix any static/interference problems you may be experiencing.

You can utilize the programming information resources on our website,www.TwoWayRadiosFor.com, to help you with this process.  The link will take you to various programming cables, cloning cables, and software that we sell for different two way radio series, as well programming instructions for some of the series.
