Why Should I Buy Business Radios Instead of Consumer Walkie Talkies?

Business Radios or Consumer Radios?

If you are in the process of buying two way radios for your business and you’re wondering why you should spend $150 or more on a single two way radio when you can buy a two-pack of walkie talkies for $99, this post is for you. Consumer walkie talkies, or Talkabouts, have their purpose, but it’s not for everyday business use. Business radios are built specifically to improve communication and safety in your business. We’ll break down some specific differences between the two below.

When Should I Buy Consumer Walkie Talkies?

Talkabouts are less expensive walkie talkies that are intended to be used for non-business use, most commonly for things like camping, hiking, or family cruises. These radios are meant to be used a few weekends out of the year. They are not intended to be used every day for years to come – they may get the range that you need for your business, but the audio quality, durability, and longevity or these walkie talkies will be disappointing. They are good for what they are made for, but they will not live up to the standards of everyday business use.

When Should I Buy Business Radios?

Business two way radios are made with the specific purpose of improving communication, safety, and customer happiness in your business. Whether you are buying for a restaurant, construction site, nursing home, school, or other business, there are radios that are designed to meet your needs. Business radios are made to be used all day, every day for years to come. They can withstand drops on concrete, harsh rains, loud and dirty environments, and some are even waterproof. They offer the greatest audio quality and durability on the market and will undoubtedly improve business operations.

If you aren’t sure which business two way radio is best for your specific use, you can visit our Radios by Industry page or give us a call at 888-560-0758. We offer a variety of business radios, accessories, and combo packs to meet your needs.

Do Two Way Radios Require An FCC License?

General Licensing Information

If you are new to two way radios, you may have heard that you need a license in order to use them. This license, officially known as an FCC License, authorizes the use of radio frequencies and regulates the use of those frequencies across the United States. Since there is some confusion as to whether or not you need an FCC License in order to use two way radios, we have written this article to clarify when a license is required.

Consumer Radios

Walkie talkies that operate on “consumer frequencies” (also called FRS radios) do not require a license. These are hand held radios that are commonly used for non-business purposes, such as camping. An example of consumer radios are the Motorola Talkabouts. You are free to use consumer walkie talkies without a license.

License-Free Radios

Most business-tier and commercial-tier two way radios require an FCC License. If you are using these two way radios without a license you may receive a fine from the FCC. While most radios do require a license, there are a couple of exceptions: MURS and Digital. Two way radios that are programmed to MURS frequencies, such as the Motorola RMM2050, do not require a license. MURS frequencies are a set of five frequencies that the FCC has designated as license-free. Most digital two way radios do not require a license. Examples of license-free digital radios include the DLR Series and the Motorola DTR600.

Having an FCC License gives you private communication in your business and prevents other people from operating on your designated frequencies. If you aren’t sure whether or not your specific two way radio requires an FCC License or if you are interested in acquiring an FCC License or purchasing two way radios, please give us a call at 888-560-0758.

How Far Can Two Way Radios Actually Communicate?

The Actual Distance of Two Way Radio Communication

Knowing how far specific two way radios can actually communicate can be difficult. Some packaging says one mile while other advertising may suggest 20 or even 30 miles, but the reality is closer to 2-5 miles with a hand held two way radio. While the range of walkie talkies can vary greatly depending on environment and the type of radio, this article will give a basic outline of what to expect with most two way radios.

Consumer Walkie Talkie Range

Typical walkie talkies that are used for camping trips or cruises often advertise 20-30 miles in range. This may be true in very rare cases, such as communicating from peak to valley with no trees or obstructions, but you shouldn’t expect that kind of range in most circumstances. These walkie talkies, also known as Talkabouts, will typically reach around a mile outdoors, but can still vary depending on how many buildings, trees, or other objects are in your immediate area.

Business Radio Range

Hand held business radios and commercial-tier radios range from one-watt of power up to five-watts of power. As a general rule of thumb, you can expect about a mile of range per watt of power. One-watt radios like the CLS1110 and CLS1410 will get about a mile outdoors or up to 200,000 square feet indoors under most circumstances. Two-watt radios, such as the Motorola RMU2040, will get one or two miles outdoors depending on the surroundings or up to 250,000 square feet indoors. Higher powered radios such as the four-watt RDU4100 or the five-watt CP200d should communicate anywhere from two to five miles outdoors.

Repeaters

If you need more range than what a hand held two way radio can provide, it is recommended that you install a repeater. Repeaters will typically be set up in a central location as high as possible in your area. Once installed, your two way radios will communicate to the repeater and then the repeater will “repeat” the message to the other two way radios. Ideally, the repeater should double your range.

While the range of two way radios can vary greatly depending on environment, power output, and other factors, you should be able to get a pretty good idea of how far they will communicate based on the type of radio that you have. If you aren’t sure which two way radio is best for you, feel free to give us a call at 888-560-0758 or read more about different types of radios on our website here.

Perhaps the most important tool to selling a car is having great salesman who provide fast, great service.  More so than in any other sales position, communication is critical for car sales representatives.  Making sure the customers get all of the information they need about the cars they are interested in, getting all of the information to the customer as quickly as possible, and ensuring timely and accurate service to the customer must be done in order to sell a car.  Car sales representatives must be equipped properly to do their job to the best of their ability and interact with customers with confidence.  Motorola 2 way radios aid car lots across the country in ensuring the best communication.

A crowded lot is exactly what you want unless the customers are not being taken care of properly due to lack of organization and communication between the staff.   We all know how hard it is to close the deal, and without proper communication it is almost impossible to please the customer.  Motorola RDM Radios, (part of the RDX Series) keep everyone on the same page and keep things organized and efficient.

One of the most popular Motorola two-way-radios for car lots is the RDM Series 2-way radios, which comes pre-programmed with FCC approved MURS frequencies, so that you don’t have to deal with the FCC or pay for frequencies.  The RDM Series comes in two different kids: the Motorola RDM2020 2 way radio and the Motorola RDM2080D 2 way radio.  Both of these RDX Series two way radios are heavy duty radios with great sound quality.  The Motorola RDM2020 is a 2-watt, 2-channel VHF two way radio, which covers up to 220,000 sq. ft. and 13 floors and has a 12-hour battery life.  The Motorola RDM2080D is the same as the Motorola RDM2020 walkie talkie radio, except that it has 8-channels and a display for naming and reading channels and to make communication even easier. Both RDM Motorola radios come complete with a belt clip, a battery pack, an individual charger station, a 1-year warranty, and free shipping.

TwoWayRadiosFor.com offers package deals and bulk pricing to make your communication needs affordable.  We offer hand held radio packages for the RDM Series handheld radio walkie talkies, as well as bundles; including multi-unit chargers and headsets.  For those looking to outfit a group of stores we offer very large bulk pricing discounts.  These bulk prices coupled with our fast delivery and attentive service make us number one in customer satisfaction.  We keep a huge inventory of all the best 2 way radios on hand to make sure we fill your order within 24 hours.  Most orders deliver free via UPS and will arrive in just a few short days.  You can purchase directly from our website using a credit card, or over the phone.  We do offer Net 30 day terms to qualified customers.

Motorola also offers a variety of high quality headsets and ear pieces to keep conversations between the staff and ensure that the customer’s experience is not interrupted by any noise.  The two most popular Motorola headsets for the Motorola RDM 2-way-radios are the 56517 and the RLN6423A.  Both of these Motorola ear pieces are push-to-talk and can be cleaned using alcohol cloths, providing easy sanitation and allowing different employees to use used headsets.  The most popular speaker-mics for the Motorola RDM two-way radios are the 53862 and the PMMN4013A.

Motorola two-way radios, such as the Motorola RDM2020, the Motorola RDM2080D, and Motorola headsets and speaker mics, such as the 56517 and RLN6423A and 53862 and PMMN4013A, are critical to successful car lot communication.  Motorola’s reputation and quality products speaks for itself as Motorola two way radios lead the way in retail communication.  The RDM Series is used across the country in many well-known car lot chains.

How Often Should I Replace My Two Way Radio Batteries?

The purpose of this blog post is to help you get the most out of your two way radio batteries.  A very common question is, “How often should I replace my two way radio batteries?”

Answer:  You should replace your two way radio batteries every 12 to 18 months.

Note: Motorola and Vertex Standard two way radio batteries are covered by a 1-year warranty.  If your battery breaks within the warranty, we’d be more than happy to assist you in getting a new battery pack through the warranty.  If your battery is out of the warranty, we have great prices for new batteries on our website:  www.TwoWayRadiosFor.com

Advice if you notice your battery is wearing out:  Before replacing your two way radio battery, make sure the battery really is the problem.  Sometimes the charger may be the issue, not the battery.  You can test this by charging the struggling battery on a different charger and seeing if it works.

How to Prolong Your Battery Life

  1. Turn the radio off while it’s charging
  2. Don’t leave it on the charger for more than one night at a time
  3. Wipe it off regularly with a napkin or paper towel to prevent dust/grime build up
  4. Store the battery in a dry place at room temperature (extreme environments and temperatures are not good for the life of the battery)
  5. Try to run them all the way down before recharging them – excessive charging wears the life down
  6. Replace batteries older than 18 months – batteries will wear out after 12 to 18 months

Why Two Way Radios Instead of Cell Phones?

The purpose of this blog post is to list some of the many reasons why your business should use two way radios instead of cell phones.  Below we have listed five of the most important reasons:

1.      You Save Money

Yes, that is correct.  Two way radios cost less than cell phones.  Two way radios are a one-time fee, whereas cell phones have monthly fees and data plans. Two way radios have NO monthly fees.  Once you buy the two way radio, it’s yours free and clear.

2.      Two Way Radios Increase Efficiency

With two way radios, you can instantly communicate with all of your employees at the same time.  No more missed phone calls, wondering if someone got your message, or having to call multiple people relaying the same message to each person individually.  With a two way radio, you push the talk button, relay your message one time, and every one of your employees with a two way radio heard the message.  This will increase efficiency tremendously.

Cell phones are not only expensive, but also time consuming.  You have to communicate with each person individually, and you never know if they’ll answer their phone or not.

3.      Two Way Radios Ensure Responsibility among Employees

When an employee is on their cell phone, you can never be sure if it’s a work call or a personal call.  There is no way to ensure work time is being maximized for productivity.  With two way radios, you never have to worry about this.  If an employee is communicating with their two way radio, you can have confidence that they are getting work done, making your business the most efficient, effective, and profitable it can be.

Furthermore, you know that everyone with a two way radio heard your message, so employees cannot use the excuse, “I didn’t get your voicemail, text, or phone call,” anymore.  If they miss a meeting, don’t get a job done, etc., they can’t use the communication device as an excuse.

4.      Two Way Radios are Built to Last

Two way radios are durable.  They are built with specific industries in mind to make sure the job gets done right.  Not only are two way radios trusted by heavy duty industries such as construction and manufacturing, they are also trusted by police, fire fighters, safety & rescue, and military.  Two way radios are built to withstand rigorous use, so you know you’re getting a good return on your investment.  Cell phones are not durable enough for most jobs, as they break easily, and are also expensive to replace.

5.      Two Way Radios Have Superior Speaker Quality

If you’re in a loud environment, two way radios make sure you are heard.  Communication is never a problem.  Cell phones don’t have loud enough speakers to ensure clear communication.  In most jobs it is vital that the message gets across clearly and accurately.  Two way radios are designed to make sure that happens.
